"The World Encyclopedia of Archaeology" can be reasonably classified as a "Coffee Table" book, and that label is not intended to be pejorative (even if the ancient skeleton prominently displayed on the cover could be a bit off-putting to some).This comprehensive book encompasses some 150 archaeological sites around the world, all accompanied by an outstanding set of well-captioned photographs, maps and drawings. Archaeological enthusiasts will immediately recognize the few dozen well-known ancient sites, but there are many more off-the-beaten-track that will be new to most readers. Each is set around a one- or two-page narrative, which is necessarily very brief, and yet not superficial. I was impressed to note that for the entries with which I am personally familiar, the descriptive text skillfully captured the essence of the site and its archaeological significance.This book should be of interest to a wide audience, from younger readers as an excellent introduction to the artifacts of the ancient world, to experienced travelers who may be seeking exotic new places to visit.

This book is an informative description of archeological sites worldwide. While it contains sites worldwide it is a bit heavy on Europe but covers sites worldwide. Recommended for those interested in archeology.
The book was a gift so I am not well enough versed in archaeology to pass judgement on the content of the book, however, I was disappointed that the book claimed to be new, had a "new" sticker slapped on it, but clearly this was a good condition used book. Time did not allow me the opportunity to exchange it, but I was disappointed.
This book is a great collection of places worldwide that have great archaeological significance. Each place is just a snapshot of what has been discovered, but it's a great place to start looking.

I bought this for my brother who is studying Archaeology and Anthropology. It was recommended to me by a few local college professors that teach the subject. It is good reading and can be used a reference for many years to come, in the field or just at home.
