The book begins with an overview which is used as the outline for the rest of the book. He has divided the book into nine chapters: 1) Ancient Church 2) Christian Empire 3) Early Middle Ages 4) High Point of the Middle Ages 5) Late Middle Ages 6) Conquest and Reformation 7) 17th-18th Centuries 8) 19th Century 9) 20th Century and the End of Modernity.Sources: An accomplished church historian, González bases his work on the studies and works he has written over the years.He also includes a list of recommended reading after each chapter, very helpful if you are just beginning to get into church history.Agreement: I appreciate this little book for what it attempts to do - give a broad overview. I believe there is benefit in seeing the big picture before, during, and after an in-depth study. For this reason I plan on reading this book again, even though I have read other books by González and am currently in Church History in Plain Language, 3rd Edition. I would also pass this book along to someone interested in church history but didn't know where to start.You should not buy this book if you are looking for a definitive work on church history (even the possibility that something like this exists is ridiculous). Don't buy this if you hate generalizations.One thing that I noticed was the amount of formatting and spelling errors in my kindle copy. I would expect Abingdon to do a better job. It was annoying, but did not force me to quit reading.Personal App: The Church has baggage. Don't accept everything that has been historically believed. Study it out and compare it with Scripture.
Daunting to say the least is any attempt to broad brush the history of Christianity in less than 100 pages as Gonzalez does in this volume. In the series "An Essential Guide" speaks of its target. Target achieved in an impressive and balanced fashion, this reviewer rates this valuable little volume. Certainly if one desires only to learn of Church History with only reading these 95 pages, this one would be deceived and further go against the goal of this volume, to get the reader interested and primed to go deeper further.Most useful to this is his comments as he writes of disputed items, and a nice suggested readings for further investigation which is based on the top responses to a survey of those who teach church history.Certainly, each of us with a theological leaning will find comments which we would challenge, e.g. his conclusion that Calvin responds to Luther with more sanctification is not all the story for me, but that Calvin relied more upon reason and common sense than Word of God, which is basic difference that led him to more sanctification emphasis. But this is only minor flaw in otherwise a well done quick jaunt through Church History and well written and well researched and thought out.Gonzalez is to be trusted Church Historian to survey an era or entire scope, then to probe deeper into interested periods.
Reading the previous reviews, I see that the missing editor is not the only problem but it is a huge one with the Kindle edition. I don't see how anyone could have the effrontery to actually present it for purchase. It reads like a poor first draft document. The book obviously never saw a proofreader much less an editor. I don't even believe the author himself gave it a second look. You can find hardly a paragraph without such bad grammar that you have to interpret instead of read. When I came back to this product page to post this review, I saw that the book is no longer offered to US customers. No on has offered to refund my purchase price however. The English Kindle edition is simply unreadable.
`Church History, An Essential Guide' by theological historian, Justo L. Gonzalez is a very good introduction to the history of Christian churches in the context of concurrent political history. One also has the assurance that the work will, as far as it goes, be very accurate, as the author has also written several `full length' histories of both Christian churches and Christian theology. Therefore, this book is a condensation of well-received longer volumes.This history walks the fine line between political and doctrinal history. The author divides the last 2000 years into nine periods which are largely demarked by political events such as the conversion of the Emperor Constantine to Christianity, the Schism between the Eastern (Greek) and Western (Latin) churches, the French Revolution, and the First World War.Two things with the organization of the book are just a bit odd. The first is that in spite of the very slim size of the book, it is actually divided into a main narrative and an even briefer summary of the author's nine periods. The second is the fact that while the author uses numerous maps and tables in his longer work, `The Story of Christianity', none of these aids to effective synopsis appear in this work.While I really feel the need for a book of this type, I think it is just a tad too short. One thing which could have been improved without enlarging the book too much was a clearer statement of doctrinal differences between Christian orthodoxy and the various heresies such as Gnosticism and Arianism. A bit of tabular presentation, as I have seen in other church histories would have gone well together with a few maps.The author has very nicely included a bibliography at the end of each chapter and modestly avoided any references to his own larger books. I'm just a bit puzzled why the author did not include J.N.D. Kelly's `Early Christian Doctrines' in his bibliography, but I guess that's because this book really doesn't deal in any depth with doctrine.A very nice guide to put major doctrinal changes in an historical perspective.
