imes Notable Book of the Year"Full of insights, marvelously entertaining . . . haunting and beautifully written." --The New York Review of Books"I lived in Athens, at the intersection of a prostitute and a saint."Â Â So begins Patricia Storace's astonishing memoir of her year in Greece. Mixing affection with detachment, rapture with clarity, this American poet perfectly evokes a country delicately balanced between East and West.Whether she is interpreting Hellenic dream books, pop songs, and soap operas, describing breathtakingly beautiful beaches and archaic villages, or braving the crush at a saint's tomb, Storace, winner of the Whiting Award, rewards the reader with informed and sensual insights into Greece's soul. She sees how the country's pride in its past coexists with profound doubts about its place in the modern world. She discovers a world in which past and present engage in a passionate dialogue. Stylish, funny, an

Let me say at the outset that I know this author and think she's wonderful—funny, perceptive, and a fine writer. Does she have a point of view? She certainly does. Agree with it or not, her point of view gives the book flavor and style, making this work infinitely more appealing than a bland travelogue. It's a good book. My only caveat is that it's too long. If it had been cut 25 percent it would be even better.
"Dinner with Persephone" is much more than a travel book -- it's a portrait of a culture, a beautifully written account of the author's year in Greece. Patricia Storace lived in Athens and traveled to towns and islands in Greece throughout her stay there. She describes the people, the customs, the festivals, and day to day life in Greece as she experienced them during her year there. There's a enough description of landscapes, archtitecture and events to make an armchair traveler happy, but the book's real strength is its illumination of the Greek way of life. We come to understand the Greek worldview, and what everyday life in Greece might be like.I can't help thinking that earlier reviewers on this page might be Turks or Greeks who took offense to some of Patricia Storace's observations -- their reactions to her book are disproportinately harsh, and their comments indicate that they either misunderstood some of what they read, or didn't read the book all the way through. If every nation had a Patricia Storace to describe its people and culture to the world, we'd understand the reasons behind our differences, and maybe accept them more easily.
An extraordinarily well-written and well-observed book, far above the general run of travel narratives. Thoughtful, well informed, and masterful in terms of tone.
The book arrived as promised and in beautiful condition.
Enjoyed it. She's a fine writer and very much into dreams.
The rating does not reflect the seller. I received the book fast and with no problems. My problem is with Storace; her Greek is abysmal, her writings reflect the faux passion she is trying to demonstrate, and she seems not to care about anything. She gives the impression of being an expert of all things Greek (she makes many points about how well her language skills are, she is overly critical of everything, etc). She reads like nothing more than someone who was given an unsavory work assignment but who has decided to make the best of it. "I have to go to Greece, ugh, at least some of it is pretty," is the air she gives off. She knows nothing about Greek life and makes little attempt to truly understand those around her.
I was born and raised n Greece. I like to read books about my birthplace the same way that chefs like to read cookbooks. This books was very well written and captures the greek spirit very well.
Storace, a Greek speaking writer goes to Athens to work for a year. She visits various islands and tourst sites describing these in interesting detail. Storace also recounts her personal contacts with oversolicitous men who make it very clear that women are meant to get married and stay home. Women are objects for men and infrequently taken seriously. The writer has ambiguous feelings about the Greeks. She does make lots of friends, but doesn't seem anxious to go back.
