Review
"There are gems throughout the book. The exercises at the end of each chapter are valuable if this book is used as a text (strong recommendation from the experience of several courses in EM and homeland security) in a course on crisis communication or emergency management or by an agency as a self-assessment of implementation. One of the strongest parts of this book is the input from field practitioners. I offer to you a book to be read and not to become another bookshelf dust target."—Dean Larson, Ph.D., CEM, in IAEM Bulletin "This book offers a unique look into the world of emergency management through the prism of social media. To achieve this perspective, the author infused her work with contributions from more than a dozen professionals in emergency management and information technology. The result is a comprehensive guided tour … would benefit managers or directors in the safety, security, or emergency management field who are looking to venture into the world of social media." —Security Management Magazine "Having read a couple of disaster communication books that were solely US orientated I initially connected with the author of this book on twitter to ask how international the book was. However I need not have worried because Connie has done an excellent job with this book in making it widely applicable to all both inside and outside the US. This book will expand your knowledge beyond the familiar use of site such as twitter/facebook to give a wider view on web 2.0 for disaster with tips and ideas that all Emergency professional should consider." --Samantha Ridler-Ueno, Social Media Manager of TIEMS

Her dissertation, A Dynamic Delphi System to Support Decision Making by Large Groups of Crisis Management Experts, focused on the creation of a crisis management system is used by large groups dispersed geographically where decisions must be made under uncertainty and among domain driven subgroups. The end result of this effort produced an application contributed to the Sahana Disaster Management System, Eden, a free and open source system created in response to the Asian tsunami, which has been used all over the world, most recently in the Haiti earthquake response, and the floods of Pakistan. Her research interests include social media, decision making, scales, Sahana, Thurstone's law of comparative judgment, artificial intelligence, and emergency management. I am working on a project that will require leveraging social media. I purchased the book through Kindle. Being a an individual who has little exposure to social media I was looking for a book that would expalin to me how it would be the most useful in my project. Dr. White's book did just that. She explained and used examples through out the book that showed me how and why social media would be benificial to the project. I think that this bbok would be invaluable to people needing to learn about social media as well as those who already are involved and need additonal insight. I found it to be well written and comprehensive.-DR. H.E. Goudarzi, CPP - President - Goudarzi Protective Services, Inc.
This book is a must if you are considering adding Social Media to your organization. It is very well written and will help our Public Safety Departments here in Durham, NC establish their Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Learn to embrace social media technology in the emergency management business or get run over by the train. This is a must read for any progressive emergency management program.
I am most impressed with Dr. White's book. The information found within serves as a valuable resource for the academic, the practitioner, and the student. I first purchased the book for use in my hospital emergency management program. However, I now use it to teach courses in crisis communications both in academia and public safety. Both my students and fellow practitioners have found this book to be well worth the investment because of the information provided by the author. The technologies, instructions, and suggestions are a valuable tool in our toolbox to help us understand how to better communicate before, during, and after a disaster.Additionally, do not overlook this book if you are do not work in emergency management. The information is very useful for other organizations as well including non-profits, for-profits, and government agencies.Doug Brown, DBA(ABD),MS,CHEP, FAcEM, NREMT
