I had the pleasure of meeting both Jake McNeice and Thomas Young in Thomas' Round Mountain, Texas. I had no idea what a blessed time it was. I was sent by my editor at the newspaper - he did not realize that I was an Army brat, and that my father's MOS was to be sent to the same training post as Jake and Tom. Sadly they did not remember meeting him - but they opened up to me with the most delightful of tales. I actually saw them transported from a dining room table in Texas to the shores of Normandy. I thank Richard for this wonderful follow-up on Jake's book the Filthy Thirteen. Thank you Amazon for helping me to find a copy for my Kindle.l
The story of The Filthy 13 and their leader Jake McNiece was a very very good read. They were an elite group of 101st Airborne Division demolition/saboteur explosive experts. Jake must have been one of the luckiest soldiers in WWII. He made 4 combat jumps. Late in the war he volunteered to join another elite unit called Pathfinders. They would parachute into dangerous situations then set up radio beacon transmitters for the transport planes to home-in on. When the 101st became encircled and besieged during the battle of the bulge they called on Jake and his pathfinders to drop into Bastogne, setup the radio beacons to guide the resupply aircraft over the target. That resupply mission in bad weather probably saved the 101st from defeat as they were getting down to the last of their ammo.Saw a couple interviews of Jake on youtube before he died at 93. I also bought the audio version of The Filthy 13 and it kind of sounded like him.As a former screaming eagle myself I was amazed that I hadn't heard this story before until just recently.
Awesome book. Very enjoyable, first-hand insight into one of history's most notorious periods. There is a very unique blend of humor and solemn recounts along the way. One minute you're almost bowing your head, grounded in respect for a soldier's sacrifice - the next, you're laughing at Mr. McNiece's mischief. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who even mildly enjoys history. My brother in law gave me this book as a gift; it is tied for first place as the best book I didn't buy for myself. Can actually see myself re-reading this at some point down the line.
One of the reasons I chose to read this book is because of the stories my Dad told me about the 101st in the war. He was at forward airbases as part of a Depot Repair Squadron, and he had plenty of contact with these men. The descriptions he gave of their looks, roughness and distain for authority fit perfectly. He would also say that we sure needed them in battle though.
For those who are interested in the unvarnished history, this is required reading. As a story documentary, persons and places my be a challenge as story views change from person(s) periodically. Stick with it and read the details. General history does not tell us the whole story like this. Not politically correct but definitely correct as it is corroborated by different sources. Gives us the real reason why the Allies (specifically the AMERICANS) prevailed. These patriots did what it took to do the job and very many gave their lives that we today might be encouraged to protect those freedoms that are being eroded.
I used both the kindle and audible version to read/listen to this book. McNiece's and his group's story is incredible to the point of near unbelievable. How could one person or a group of people be part of so many historically significant events during World War II? And if they were, how could they have remained in the background for so many years. The footnotes within the kindle edition helped to dispel my disbelief. There is much in the McNeice stories that may seem self-aggrandizing but once I got over my initial impression, these stories became more clear as the recollections after a number of years. The author does an excellent job backstopping many of these recollections with stories for other former soldiers or reference material. One of the more disturbing stories was the restriction of paratroopers from the city where SHAEF HQ located when the paratroopers came back from Operations Market Garden.Taking the references into account, this is an exceptional book and a must read for anyone interested in the history of the 101st.
Totally excellent! I've been reading World War II books for severals years now and I've got to put this into the top 5. At first I didn't care to much for this guy's life style. Fact is it's just to much drinking to suit me, so naturally I didn't except him to last to long. Boy, was I wrong. If I had to go to war I would want him by my side all the way. McNiece may love the booze but when it came to the business of war and survivaling a war zone.....You got to love him.You will totally enjoy this book and you will learn of the facts of what the Air Borne had to do and endure. We owe a great deal as a country and personnaly to the sacrifices that these men made, both of their life's and time away from their love ones. It's all here. You'll have a hard time setting this book down. Except to be late to work the next morning! LOL enjoy!
I really liked this book. Although the author's exploits sometimes seemed a bit far fetched, I can understand why he and his group were such good fighters for the missions they were accomplishing. As a 28 1/2 year military veteran, (yes I was in combat for a year) it was somewhat troubling that the "hero" would have nothing to do with discipline for himself. He did however force discipline on his troops in the field as a group leader. All in all, a very interesting read.
