This is a more than competent look at the history, effects and after-life of prohibition in the USA.The background is detailed and interesting, the reasons explained and the effects covered in a logical way.I expected more details on the criminal aspects during prohibition: how they operated, were financed, staffing, etc - it is mentioned, but only in passing.MOST INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE.
Excellent short story of Prohibition. Extremely accurate. Some people thought alcohol was the evil. Alcohol is only evil when it's over consumed. It does have medicinal purposes. In Biblical times, people drank wine because it helped settled the stomach(again not over consumed), and some water was not readily available or unfit to drink. The American people were misguided by a group of people who thought prohibition would end poverty, stop crime, and create social reform. They were wrong. It did just the opposite. All things in moderation, don't over eat, over drink, etc.
Very concise and well written history of alcohol and prohibition in America. Includes early history of alcohol in American colonial times. And perhaps a lesson for modern times, make sure you study the problem carefully and recommended solution before implementation. Else there be unintended consequences. Global warming pundits, are you listening?
While I knew a lot about prohibition by what my parents had told me, I didn't know what a complete failure the amendment actually was.
Prohibition was a very amazing time for the USA. This hourly synopsis of that period of time excellent. Explaining the culture and times that bred the move to prohibition and the subsequent results was fascinating. An easy read leaving the reader with a much better understanding of this time period.
This was a great book that told the truth about how devastating prohibition was to our country. It is filled with facts that contradict the anti-drinking crowd. It is very easy to read in one sitting and very well written.
