I gave the first novel 4 stars because I was not totally convinced of the strength of writing. Now I am so convinced and thus the highest rating. It will be interesting to read how the next 20 years to 1776 will expand Carlisle and Holbrook’s careers. He is, of course, a Virginian by birth (alongside my paternal and maternal ancestors) but will have been a King’s officer during this time. Fair winds and calm seas, Mr. Durbin, until we meet again.
The second novel is just as good as the first; if not a little better due to the author's skill at portraying the main characters' ability to fight a ship. I can not express how much I am looking forward to reading the third novel of this series. Well done.Aurora Wolf a Literary Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy
Enjoyed this book. Good character development continued. Interesting locale for all the action. Even in this time period it was difficult to deal with personnel issues tainted by politics. Mr. Chalmers provides an excellent sounding board for the Captain's loneliness of command. Can't wait for the next volume.
I have read them all, in terms of Age Of Fighting Sail books/series. However,this is the first review that I have given. So far, this has been an excellent series,and I am anxious to read the next one.I grew up in WesternPA, where the French & Indian War happened in my backyard. It is very interesting to get the naval side of this conflict,as well as the grand strategy of the seven years war. Well written with plenty of nautical action and details. Highly recommended!
I have read several series of naval warfare in the late 1700s-1800s. My favorite relaxation literature. Finding Chris Durbin with his own distinctive crisp style and attention to detail, is a delight. I am hooked for the history, the detail and the relationships he fleshes out so well.
A well mixed novel of a fictional storyline overlaid in the factual environment of a 18th century warship. I enjoyed Mr. Durbin's attention to detail with the workings of a naval warship while providing an entertaining story around the principal characters. I look forward to his third installment of the series.
The second book in the series is even better than the first. I did not want it end. Well researched an accurate. Can't wait fothe third book!
This is a great addition to the genre of historical naval fiction! Durbin does an excellent job in character development and keeps the action well paced. The setting of the mid 1760's is fresh and untouched by other authors who focus on the French-British war of the Napoleonic era. Huzzay! And keep them coming!
