I own a number of the "over in the..." books which combine counting with learning about animals in a particular ecosystem - plus they also have finding hidden animals on each page. However, none of them addressed the northern California redwoods which is important to us, so I picked up this book. I give the illustrations a 4/5 because there was a lack of refined detail in the artwork that made everything seem blurry plus the bald eagle was flying high up without any close example to better see its features. The hidden animals were also either hard to see or blatantly obvious. The text gets a 3/5. The pages always end with a "..." to rhyme with the next number (which I liked in Ten Tiny Tadpoles, but do not like here). The overall book is a 3/5. I also was not that engaged by the types of animals presented - I did like the bats and banana slugs, but some things like ladybugs and bumble bees just seemed a poor choice to be the main animal on the page. I mean you can find those species everywhere across the US, so why were those so important to include in the redwood ecosystem over other area-specific species? I wanted the main animals shown to be like pine martins and marbled murrelet. I also think limiting the species to what was in the trees left out a lot of animals like the Roosevelt elk.Overall, the book earns a 3/5
Beautiful counting book that will work for a variety of ages and developmental stages.
My two year old absolutely loves this book. The pictures are beautiful and it gives her an appreciation for the busy ecosystem of the Redwoods.
Very cute. My boy is into squirrels and chipmunks lately and the pictures are wonderful.
Beautiful illustrations with short rhyming text about animals found in the forest. Extra information at the end of the book. Was a hit with toddlers.
Very cute book. Perfect for reading with my baby but I wish it was a board book or the hard cover was less expensive.
educational gift for my sister's six grandchildren
Read this to my 4 year old tonight. We are outside a lot (camping, hiking) and she loved the pictures and story. My 9 year old loved the facts and details in the back.
