I read a blog somewhere comparing this to Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Mist & Fury. I completely agree. Unfortunately, this is nowhere near as well done.I finished, but wasn't impressed. Maybe this will get you through until Maas's next installment. Maybe not.My issues:* It's nice to finally see a fantasy novel not featuring a YA-couple. Unfortunately, I found Callie to be very immature. So, basically it was like reading YA.* So much of this novel centered on Solstice, but the political machinations lacked depth. Further, for a gathering of all of these characters, the vast majority were flat. I would have loved to know more about Malaki, or about Mara, or about the Green Man, or about Janus. Or about any of the guards. Or about Gallagher. But.. nothing.* Basically everything leading up to Solstice, I found to be filler. The tour of the kingdoms served no purpose from a plot perspective. I think this whole novel could have been planned out much better.
I felt their were some major changes to the characters are the 2nd book developed and they were not the same individuals they were in the first book. Yes people change but they don't regress like this. More whiny less confident more juvenile etc. I still hated all the excessive swearing. Also juvenile. Great story though and I was sad to see it droop from the first book.
With a sigh and a lot of anticipation I close this second book in the trilogy. The first book was mainly about the romance and history between Callie and Des, but this one explores what has been happening in the Kingdoms of the Fae. The disappearance of the warriors, the sleeping women and the strange children. Not to forget the Thief of Souls...After what happened to Callie in the Kingdom of Fauna, the story is now taking place in the Kingdom of Flora during the mandatory celebrations of Solstice.I love the still developing relationship of Des and Callie. Even with all the scary events, they have their private moments. When the book ends, you will want to get your hands on the next one asap! I am enjoying this series a lot!I have seen reviews were readers are disappointed and I do understand. The first book was amazing and a love story. This is more like a bridge to a big finale, the in-between. I still love Des and Callie (even when she sometimes is a bit too eager to step into situations she is not equipped to handle to say it nicely).
I think I have a book hangover. This book was amazing. Laura Thalassa is a master story teller. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I could barely put this book down. It was over much too quickly, and left me desperately wanting more. I am so glad the last book comes out this winter. I cannot wait to read it. I NEED to know what happens next!I thoroughly enjoyed the character development in this second book in the Bargainer series.Desmond, the Bargainer, King of the Night Court, and Lord of Chaos, is an even more complex character than the first book hinted at. I loved diving into his past and learning about his family.Callie continues to astound me with her strength of character and sheer force of will. No matter what happens she refuses to be a victim. She continues to get stronger and train to better face her enemies. Would that we all had such strength.Temper is my favorite character. I love the dynamic between Temper and Callie. Their friendship reminds me of myself and my best friend. There were some great moments where we learned about Temper’s powers that were just vaguely illuded to in the first book. I hope she gets her own happily ever after eventually. If you have read the first book in the Bargainer series, you HAVE to pick this book up. You won’t want to put it down.
I have mixed feelings about A Strange Hymn. I really liked Rhapsodic for the strength of its lead characters and the development of their relationship (both past and present). I appreciated that the second installment continued to highlight this aspect (although it was not as much of a focus as before). Even though this book picked up where the last one left off, I had a hard time getting into the story. There were several sections throughout that just dragged. I did enjoy the further exploration of the Otherworld - including the tour of the Night Kingdom. I really wanted more world building after reading Rhapsodic so this was satisfying. However, with Callie's powers pretty much unusable in that realm, she lost some of what made her a strong and confident character previously. Instead, she was relatively useless to defend herself and became heavily reliant on Des. Her physical training was okay, but I'm not sure why she trained with a sword when she preferred to use daggers. It was nice to have Temper show up more in this, but she still felt underutilized and a bit flat. The last few chapters were more exciting with several big reveals, but they mainly served to set up the last novel in the trilogy. This was a decent continuation of the series, but I wasn't as impressed with it.
